General Information
Description of ServiceNorthampton Community College offers a training course for individuals who need to obtain a CDL driver's license. Program offers:
- Class A Program: Prepares the student to take the necessary exams to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License to operate a Class A vehicle. Successful students will earn a Class A CDL with air brakes, hazardous materials, tank, and doubles/triples endorsements.
- Class A Refresher Program: This course is designed for the student with previous verifiable theoretical instruction or driving experience. The previous experience must be verified with a program coordinator. In addition the applicant must be current on Hours of Service regulations and demonstrate the ability to prepare daily logs.
- Class B Program: to teach students how to operate a Class B vehicle. Successful students will earn a Class B CDL .
Urgent Services ProvidedTraining programs to help prepare the student to take the necessary exams to obtain a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) to operate Class A and Class B vehicles.

Intake RequirementsCourse prerequisites:
1. Must be 18 years of age to obtain a CDL license.
(Cannot carry hazardous materials or cross PA state lines until age 21).
2. Must have a valid driver’s license.
3. Must be able to obtain a PA or NJ CDL written knowledge permit. (No outstanding traffic violations and/or suspensions, and not delinquent on any court ordered payments).
4. Must be able to pass a Department of Transportation Physical and a Federal Chain of Custody Drug Screen. See Federal Regulations on page 6.
5. Must have dependable transportation to and from class.
6. Must have a positive attitude and a commitment to safe driving.
7. Federal Motor Carriers Fleet Safety Compliance Manual Part 391.11 Section (a) (2) indicates that the driver shall be able to read and speak the ENGLISH language sufficiently to understand highway traffic signs and signals and directions given in ENGLISH and respond to official inquiries.
8. Federal regulations require a Security Threat Assessment for those pursuing a HazMat endorsement. General information about HazMat and the costs are available from any staff member.
Additional RequirementsUpon enrolling:
1. The student will complete and pass an entrance exam or provide proof of post-secondary degree.
2. The student must come into the office and complete a Pre-Admission Questionnaire, Registration Form, a Background Screening Authorization and Release Form, and a Student/College Agreement.
3. The student will be given an appointment for a DOT physical and drug screen.
4. The student will be given a completed permit application to obtain their CDL written knowledge permit.
5. The student will have their funding source secure.
6. Pay a non-refundable enrollment fee of $200 to reserve your seat.
