General Information
Description of ServiceThe Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low-income families pay their heating bills. LIHEAP is a grant. You do not have to repay it.

To receive help:
You don't have to be on public assistance
You don't need to have an unpaid heating bill
You can either rent or own your home

LIHEAP offers both cash and crisis grants, and is open for application starting by November of each year.

Cash Grants help families pay their heating bills. The grant payment is sent directly to your utility company or fuel provider, and it will be credited on your bill. (In some cases, the check may be mailed to you directly.)

Crisis Grants help families who have an emergency and are in danger of being without heat. Emergency situations include: having broken heating equipment, (like a furnace) or leaking lines. A fuel shortage that may leave you without heat, Having utility service shut off. If you have a heating emergency please call your local County Assistance Office.
Intake ProcedureCalls for LIHEAP are taken through the regional office in Danville, PA. Clients can also apply online on the COMPASS website or through their local county assistance office.
Intake RequirementsTo apply, you will need:
- Names of people in your household, Dates of birth for all household members, Social Security Numbers for all household members
- Proof of income for members of your household for the past 30 days
- A recent utility bill dated within 2 months of application or a deliverable fuel bill.

EligibilityHomeowners and renters who are on low or fixed incomes and whose yearly income before taxes is at or less than LIHEAP annual Guidelines.
